Being Progressive
Our brains are wired to find safety in routine and predictability. But progressive values push us towards change by expanding our circle of care and inclusiveness. Fear and resistance are therefore obvious responses to a sustainable lifestyle, progressive policies and ideologies. Often fear can hide behind an excuse to maintain the status quo. It requires a scientific mind and empathetic heart to overcome fear, push past discomfort, and embrace progressive values. What was your response to the One Health approach, or to a donation-free campaign?
Corporations have been taking advantage of our fear of change. For example, the meat and dairy industry have combined contradictory terms like “humane meat” and “sustainable beef” to engage customers in blind consumerism. Their profit is invested back into our political system through lobbying for policies that support their false marketing strategies, push back on actual solutions and use taxpayer dollars to subsidize their industry.
We all want a safe, prosperous future. But are we willing to overcome our fear of change and integrate progressive values into our lifestyle?
